Follow the Breadcrumbs

Once upon a time, in the depths of the Black Forest, two young travellers were to be found. Their names were Joshel and Yazzel, and they wanted to learn the secret of why the forest wasn't quite as black or foresty as they expected.

They had been advised to seek the wisdom of Siegfried the Squirrel, the cleverest squirrel in the forest.
Siegfried pondered long and hard about the mystery of the minimal blackness and forestness. 'There is a river', said the squirrel, 'that flows through ten countries. It stretches from the Black Forest to the Black Sea. Find its source and there the answer awaits you.'

So Joshel and Yazzel ventured to Martinskappelle, where they found 2 houses, a chapel and a spring.

The spring, as it turned out, was the source of the Danube, so Joshel and Yazzel knew they were in the right place. Joshel bent down and tasted the waters of the Danube, then waited for a revelation.

The water put Joshel under a spell. He followed the stream until it became a river.

By the banks of the river, he met Little Red Riding Hood who was picking raspberries. (Unfortunately she doesn't photograph well, but berries do.)

She advised Joshel to go visit the seven dwarves, down by the lake, but they were at Rapunzel's birthday party so could not help Joshel with his quest.

Instead, Joshel met Nils the Nutcracker. 'The secret of the Black forest does not lie in the waters' said Nils, 'you must retrace your steps, for Yazzel is close to the answer.'

Joshel awoke from his daze and ran about the forest trying to find his lost Yazzel. He travelled far and wide, but could not see her anywhere. He sat on the bridge in Schiltach and tried to think  - where would she be if she was left by herself in the Black Forest? And then he knew!

Yazzel must be eating Black Forest Cake!!!

And so she was. They were reunited, but they still didn't know the answer to their mysterious question. Then Yazzel had an epiphany. 'Of course! We can just check wikipedia' she exclaimed. And they lived happily ever after.

Then they visited Strasbourg, back in France. Here are some pretty pictures.

And then they crossed back to the Black Forest, to Europa Park
